Immunity はラテン語の immunisが語源です。
immunisの意味は「exempt from public service：公的役務を免れる、untaxed：課税対象外、unburdened：重荷から解放される、not tributary：従属していない」です。

immunis は、in- + munis から成る語です。in- は「not, opposite of：否定を表す」のim- と同語で、munis は「performing services：働く、奉仕する」の意味です。

医学の分野において「免疫」の意味で使われ始めたのは1880年代の頃からだそうです。

今月、米連邦最高裁がトランプ米大統領の財務記録について、ニューヨーク連邦地検の閲覧を認める判断を示しましたが、この件でトランプ大統領が主張していたのが presidential immunity でした。
